Due to the Covid-19 Outbreak

And as per directive from Bowls Victoria  our club will be closed until further notice

The club will be in total lockdown until the virus has passed.

The day opened fine and mild and the decision was made to play on the grass outdoors at Traralgon. The locals Newborough arrived with a good crowd of spectators who would cheer them on along with a number of Traralgon members who supported their conquerors from the grand final in their battle with Phillip Island.

Newborough had a difficult week prior to the playoff having to reduce their team from sixteen to twelve as West Gippsland plays teams of sixteen players and the Vic titles are played with twelve players. Gun skipper Kevin Lovett had a heath scare during the week and was a late withdrawal as he lined up for surgery in hospital on Friday. Players were encouraged with the news that he was travelling well after his operation and was looking forward to hearing news of a win to Newborough.

Nosha Michaels and his rink of Charlie Ward, George Lambos and John Backman continued their good form from the grand final defeating Russell May of Phillip Island 32 – 14 in a match that was shot for shot until of the tenth end their was a three way tie with two Newborough and one Phillip Island bowl all touching the jack. A most unusual occurrence leaving the score at 9 all after ten ends

At this stage of the match Phillip Island held a handy fourteen shot lead following some multiple shot ends by Phillip Island skipper David Hanlon as he lad Paul Sherman from Newborough and his rink of Barry Daley, JoAnne Michaels and Keiran Gardiner 14 – 3.

Nosha Michaels’ team regrouped as the triple tied end was endorsed by the umpire and they scored a five and a three on the next two ends to go in to afternoon tea 17 – 9 up. Paul Sherman had won five successive ends and went in to tea trailing David Hanlon 9 – 19. With these two teams virtually balancing themselves out all eyes turned to Alan Grubb’s rink of Tony Knipping, Craig Thornton and Neale Houston who had only won five ends prior to tea and were trailing Daryl Major from Phillip Island 9 – 16 leaving Phillip Island with a cozy buffer of nine shots and leading by 9 shots with a 44 – 35 lead after 40 ends.

At afternoon tea Newborough were reminded of how Warragul had come from a much worse position on Tuesday in the midweek Strzelecki playoff when they defeated Leongatha comfortably after trailing badly early in the match.

Newborough rallied after afternoon tea with Nosha Michaels extending his lead to 20 – 9, Sherman was only six behind at 14 – 20 and Grubb had remained seven shots behind at 11 – 18. Newborough was only two shots behind trailling 45 – 47.

David Hanlon and Daryl Major encouraged their rinks to gain 9 shots and extend the lead to 57 – 48 after 55 of the 75 ends were completed. Nosha Michaels replied with a five shot endand after 61 ends Newborough hit the front leading 60 – 58 On the second last end Daryl Major drew four shots and lead Alan Grubb 30 – 16 and put Phillip Island back in the lead 69 – 67.

Every bowl was important now and Alan Grubb repeated his heroics of last week where he changed a four shot deficit into a four shot win by winning five shots on his last end putting Newborough in the lead 72 – 71 with Nosha Michaels having two ends to play. On the penultimate end Michaels drew shot and leading by two shots going in to the last end his third John Backman encouraged him to cover all of the Phillip Island bowls making it difficult or tehm to obtain the three shots needed for victory or two shots to have all teams play an extra end.

Michaels scored one shot on the last end to win 32 – 14 and help Newborough to a 74 – 71 win over a Phillip Island team who had fought the match out playing on an unfamiliar grass surface at Traralgon Bowls Club who were congratulated for providing an excellent playing surface which allowed players to display their skills throughout the afternoon much to the enjoyment of spectators.

Newborough have now qualified for the State Playoffs at Moama in early May providing they are not cancelled due to the Covid-19 cancellations of sporting events. Bowls players were disappointed to hear that the Sunday trials at Traralgon for the State Regional Sides Championship scheduled for Shepparton in April had been cancelled due to both the Men’s and Ladies competitions being cancelled due to the virus.

Newborough 74 Phillip Island 71

Alan Grubb 21 Daryl Major 30
